Caitlin & Theo Hospital Birth

Caitlin Son via hospital birthHi Sara,

Hope you’re doing well and staying warm this snowy weekend!

I just wanted to let you know our son Theodore was born January 12! He is truly a little bundle of joy.

My labor experience was quite smooth – I started having contractions at 3 am and by 11:30 am he was in my arms! When we got to the hospital around 7 am my water broke immediately and the midwives and my doula were all very surprised that I was fully dilated — apparently the way I was behaving and vocalizing they wouldn’t have guessed I had progressed that far. I heard an astonished “Uh… There’s no cervix there. She’s complete!” when they finally examined me. I didn’t even really have time to listen to the recording or try the more specific techniques, because things seemed to go so quickly. But I did manage to just close my eyes, breathe, let go, and relax for the majority of the time. My doula said she’s never seen someone have such success with hypnosis-based birthing techniques and I really attribute that to you and the Blissborn course!

We had some little challenges toward the end; I was pushing for about 2.5 hours and the baby was stuck with the top of his head showing for about an hour. His heart rate started to slow (and take a long time to recover) to a dangerous extent with some of the later contractions and efforts to change my position, and my contractions started spacing further and further apart, so I ended up needing pitocin and an episiotomy in the last 10-15 minutes to get him out. (But no pain medication!) They were preparing to do a vacuum extraction but I was able to push him out just before they were about to go for it. It turned out he had a very short umbilical cord that made it tough to get him out and maintain a strong heart rate.
Anyway, amid all of that i never worried or felt anxious — I was able to stay mostly calm and relaxed.  I feel very happy, grateful and at-peace with the way it all went. I am so thankful we did the Blissborn class with you, I really think it made all the difference in helping me stay focused on maintaining a state of relaxation, calmness and allowing the process to unfold. (With a few curse words uttered along the way.)
Thank you and let me know if you’d like any other information!
Take care,
Caitlin
